Mississauga Humane Society Redesign
Roles : UX/UI Designer
Duration : 4 Weeks
Overview
For a school group project, we needed to find a non-profit website to redesign. As a dog lover, I suggested we choose the Mississauga Humane Society. The Mississauga Humane Society is dedicated to finding forever homes and loving families for local animals in need.
How can we help them? What problems need to be solved? Let's take a look at their current website.
The Current Iteration of the Website
Challenge
After conducting a heuristic evaluation, the current website has some issues, including:
Lack of Featured Adoptable Animals : The website does not prominently display adoptable animals on the front page, making it harder for users to find them quickly.
Overwhelming 'Ways to Help' Section : The section dedicated to ways users can help is too large and not intuitive, which can be overwhelming and confusing for visitors.
Inconsistent Colour Scheme : The pages lack consistency in their colour scheme, leading to a disjointed and less cohesive user experience.
Research
My research first centred around the one-on-one interviews would help me understand users' adopting experience and specific issues the website would need to address. Secondly, observe the competitive landscape to understand how other animal rescue websites are addressing similar issues.
As a User Researcher, I want to understand
- The process they went through when adopting a pet from the animal rescue community.
- Are there any barriers preventing people from adopting a pet on current website?
- Why do people choose the website from which they adopt their pets?

Problem
“Users are experiencing confusion in the current website, as most sites typically feature animals in the hero image. This inconsistency has led to uncertainty about the website's credibility among users ”
PainPonit
"
The current website doesn't feature adoptable animals upfront or information about the adoption process which negatively impacts the user experience leading to lower pet adoption rates.
